AI Overviews are the AI-generated summary that now appears above traditional Google search results. They drive a 61% drop in organic clicks when shown. For law firm queries, AIO appears on a growing majority of relevant searches. Being cited inside the overview is the new top-of-page.

The mechanism.

Google AI Overviews are generated by Gemini-class models running on top of Google's index. When a user searches a query Google considers AIO-eligible, the model retrieves the top-ranking pages, synthesizes an answer, and displays that answer above the SERP with inline citations linking to the source pages. The user reads the answer and often does not click any blue link at all.

The implication for law firms is significant. A firm that ranks #1 organically for "best car accident lawyer Tampa" but does not get cited inside the AIO loses a majority of the click traffic that ranking used to deliver. The blue link is still there. The user just doesn't reach it.

What Google AIO over-weights.

  1. Featured-snippet-style content. Pages structured to answer the query in a clean 40-60 word direct response are heavily favored.
  2. FAQPage schema. Q&A schema is one of the strongest signals for AIO inclusion.
  3. Topical authority. Domains that are deeply established for a topic get cited more often than domains with broad-but-shallow coverage.
  4. Recency. Articles updated recently rank higher in AIO retrieval than stale content with the same authority.

How to engineer for Google AI Overviews.

Five priorities. First, restructure key landing pages around direct-answer formatting — a clear 40-60 word answer near the top, followed by depth. Second, implement FAQPage schema with the actual questions consumers ask. Third, build topical depth through interlinked practice-area content. Fourth, refresh content quarterly to maintain recency. Fifth, ensure the page that should be cited is also the page that ranks organically — AIO usually pulls from the top three to five organic results.

Velocity: AIO updates retrieval as the underlying index updates. A firm publishing well-structured, schema-rich content typically begins appearing in AIO citations within 4-8 weeks.

For high-intent legal queries, AI Overviews have largely replaced the traditional top-three blue links as the consumer's first read. A firm not cited inside the overview is losing share to whichever firms are — regardless of organic ranking position.
